gis data automatic reporting tool [duplicate]

I have a case where GIS data are scattered in many computers. I have to migrate these data to a central GIS system. Some of these data are at least 10 old. I need to figure out how to find out where data are stored, what attributes they include and if possible their extent and coordinate system. During the past I developed an application based on ESRI Map Objects but only for shapefiles. Now I have DXF and microstation files too. Is there anyone who had a similar situation??
