MapInfo "Boundary Select", "Sum Attributes", and "Update Column by Spatial Query" in QGIS?

I´m a MapInfo user, I´ve gone over to QGIS and it´s got a lot going for it, except for some "missing" simple features from MapInfo I just can´t do without....

  1. MapInfo Boundary Select - spatial query on the fly to select objects in one layer contained within objects in another layer.

  2. MapInfo Sum Attributes - show sum of numerical attribute fields on the fly for selected objected.

  3. Also Update Column by Spatial Query - Yes its possible in QGIS but SO much simpler in MapInfo - especially using the command line.

QGIS seems to have no simple solution to these - or am I missing a plugin or something? I´ve tried to dig out every related plugin I can find, with no real luck. Any suggestions or explanation? Cheers.

  1. There is no way that I know of to sum numerical attributes in qGIS. I would like to be able to do this using an openlayers server.. it seems like there should be an example of this out there.. Select multiple features, hit info and get summed numerical information.. such as total area..
